ORIGIN late Middle English : from gun + wale (because it was formerly used to support guns).

Gunnel is the varmint, er, variant spelling...

Skinny stickers? Stash your paddle on the foredeck and use both hands. More stable, easier to hold your line, kinder on your anatomy, less wear on the blade. I never ground my paddle unless it is much more essential than an everyday launch...
