A very interesting subject. I agree that people from the US have some strange ideas about risk...or maybe people in general. What is too risky and what is not? When I moved to Cali, Colombia to live for 4 years, how many people from the US looked at me like I was crazy, told me things like buy a gun, and made other really stupid comments. Working and traveling even backpacking in the region I met many young people from Canada, Europe etc. very few from the US. Much of that may have more to do with how things are presented to us US folks by the news. A couple of kids disappear in Costa Rica and you hear about it for weeks yet, how many kids suffer a similar fate every night here in the good old US?...do we see the parents on GMA or some similar "news" program???
More people are bitten by New Yorkers every year then by sharks! and I think we are in far greater danger in our cars then we are in our kayaks...provided we know a few things about the sport and plan appropriately.
Like the man said, some fear is good, it might keep you alive... I think it follows that too much fear must keep you from living.
I would not think of attempting anything like that of course, few people would but few people knew what this guy did... by the way, what about all these folks climbing Mount Hood and not coming back down?...what country are they from? What preparations have they made?
: There is a whole different perception of risk outside the US. Not so much of
: the risk itself, but whether or not it should be taken. Even just to the
: north in Canada, people dismiss things as insignificant that would put an
: American over the edge with self-righteous rage. They also stress common
: sense and personal responsibility a lot more than we do, so that explains
: a lot.: This same argument popped up on another BBS, and when I asked the question of
: if it were given that risk taking by parents was foolhardy, then should we
: limit Police, Firefighting, Military, Construction, (Fill in your own
: risky occupation), etc to just the childless, I was flamed as being
: anti-american for denigrating firefighters............uh, that wasn't what
: the question was about, and I certainly wasn't denigrating anyone. Bottom
: line was they didn't have a logical response, since I used their premise
: against them to make a point --- there's more than one way to decide to
: risk your life, and your survivors really don't care why you're dead ---
: they just care THAT you are dead. It's just as tragic if you die in a car
: accident coming home from work.: Anyway, I think everyone should be allowed to make their own judgements about
: their own lives, and how to live them. If they are willing to take risks
: or not take risks, both are legitimate choices, and your reasons are yours
: alone. If any of us don't like it, well, that's freedom for you.: And for what it's worth, I'm just sad that he didn't make it, especially
: because he came so close to pulling it off.
