There is a whole different perception of risk outside the US. Not so much of the risk itself, but whether or not it should be taken. Even just to the north in Canada, people dismiss things as insignificant that would put an American over the edge with self-righteous rage. They also stress common sense and personal responsibility a lot more than we do, so that explains a lot.
This same argument popped up on another BBS, and when I asked the question of if it were given that risk taking by parents was foolhardy, then should we limit Police, Firefighting, Military, Construction, (Fill in your own risky occupation), etc to just the childless, I was flamed as being anti-american for denigrating firefighters............uh, that wasn't what the question was about, and I certainly wasn't denigrating anyone. Bottom line was they didn't have a logical response, since I used their premise against them to make a point --- there's more than one way to decide to risk your life, and your survivors really don't care why you're dead --- they just care THAT you are dead. It's just as tragic if you die in a car accident coming home from work.
Anyway, I think everyone should be allowed to make their own judgements about their own lives, and how to live them. If they are willing to take risks or not take risks, both are legitimate choices, and your reasons are yours alone. If any of us don't like it, well, that's freedom for you.
And for what it's worth, I'm just sad that he didn't make it, especially because he came so close to pulling it off.
