I personally find some of these responses surprising. Andrew's most avid supporter was his wife and friends - Yes, this was an enormous risk - a 1600 mile open water crossing - he was very aware of that and took a lot of preventative measures to help his chances. In fact, he turned back once in the beginning. His child is too young to voice his opinion, but if he grows up to be an adventurer like his father, he will be a wonderful asset to elite sports.

Aren't we all risk takers? - Afterall, you proably have better chances of dying in a car accident then kayaking. What about trips to Block Island or to the Race??? Where would America be if no risks had been taken??? Come on guys, in this time of tragedy, let's ackowledge this fine man's accomplishments, not his mistakes!

Remember, we all take calculated risks in life - the more elite athletes,of course take bigger ones at times. I admire people like him, Chriss Duff, Mike Falconeri, you get the point!

Would I take a risk like this a a father of 4 children - probably not. But who knows - Crossing Lake Erie is ~20 open miles and I think about it everyday! What about just taking off in my kayak on a voyage - think about it everyday!

He only had 30 miles left and had survived gale force winds and 30+ foot swells - Land was in sight and the conditions were relatively calm.. Sound familiar - yes! the conditions most of us paddle in on a routine basis.

My deepest sympathies to his friends, supporters and family -- SteveB
