Thames River help

I am trying to map out my Thames-to-the-Sea route from downtown Norwich, ending at either Groton Long Point or even to Bluff Point park. However, I am having a tough time finding maps or guidance on rules regarding which sides of the river I should avoid on the trip. I am seeing the Coast Guard Academy, Naval Sub Base, various industrial areas out past the bridge, ferry landings, etc.

Does anyone know where I could go for this type of information? I don't want to get run over, shot at, arrested, or detained on this little adventure..
