Well, you have to get the whole visual to understand why my brother and I learned at a very young age not to wander into the corn when Grandpa was on the porch in his rocking chair.
In order to sit out on the porch, he required: 1)A book to read 2)A block of cheese, or a few apples 3) At least one pack of smokes, sometimes two if it was a thick book 4) A quart of Hampden Ale and 5)A rifle or shotgun, depending on the season. He said the guns worked OK on 'chucks and even better on people selling religion door to door (A 12-gauge filled with rock salt was a fave load for them).
He used to lease out his cornfield as a major source of income, so in his mind, killing varmints was in his best interests. And considering that he had emphysema, it was usually the most excitement he could get that wouldn't cause him to not be able to breathe. As I recall, he was a really good shot, too.
