Full name = Roy Douglas Downey (explains the “User Name” vs. “E-mail Address” difference thing…)

Started canoeing in the mid 90’s.
Bought my first kayak (Old Town Loon 120) in 1999 and paddled protected inland water areas. Took several ACA kayaking courses (Intro, forward stroke, roll & rescue) and in the process discovered sea kayaking. In 2001 I started paddling a VCP AvocetRM. Cut my teeth in waves off of Great Island in Old Lyme. Got involved with Connyak and joined in 2002 when proposed legislation sought to regulate & tax kayakers.
Started paddling an NDK Explorer in 2003.
Enjoy paddling just about anywhere especially if there’s waves and tidal races. Mostly Eastern CT shoreline, Fischer’s Island Sound, Rhode Island coastline, Connecticut River.
Also enjoy hiking, biking, XC skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter months.
Club Skill Level = Intermediate/Advanced

Over the years in Connyak I've participated in fun events such as the annual Rescue Clinic, giving back to new paddlers valuable skills taught to me by senior members of Connyak. Participated in the Spring Paddle Demo at Cedar Lake, and organized Navigation and VHF Radio classes for club members.

Kayaking is the type of activity one can take to whatever level they feal comfortable with and still enjoy it.
