need anyone's expertise on this critical question: i'm now taking a red cross lifeguard course for certification at any pool. i'd like to demonstrate for the class a shallow water [water up to my neck] rescue by THE LIFEGUARD, NOT ANOTHER KAYAKER, of a capsized kayaker who can't right himself/herself, for whatever reason, including heart problems, panic. etc. this is pretty easy, and i've demo'd it many times at the shallow end of a pool, grabbing the victim's shoulders and heaving him/her up..but they'll ask me, what about the deep end? here i don't really know what to do, as a lifeguard AT THE DEEP END! i vaguely remember cheri saying, if you're swimming, to heave your belly onto the hull cross-wise, grab the coaming on the far side underwater, and lean back with all your weight, pulling the "patron" upright. but i don't want to misinform 16 other lifeguard course participants. or fail to help a patron either. thoughts? important! thanks, sandy
