Being a surfer (short boat surfer) I would worry about an ear plug that enters the ear canal.
Reason is, I've been clocked by some hearty waves and had I had ear plugs in, they would have been driven deep into my ear canal!
An ear cover of some sort that can't be driven into the ear canal by pressure would be my preference for surfing.
I've used the disposable foam earplugs for general rolling with great results.
I like Jays method of adding something inside the hood. I'll have to try that one.

: Doug's question about cold water ear damage reminded me there must
: have been something similar on the BBS eons past. There may be
: many different Surfer's Earplugs but this is the one that popped
: up for me. The idea is that you can hear while keeping the water
: out. A dive hood or 'survival hood' works. Regular earplugs work
: but you can't hear much.
: My policy is that ice water is a toxic substance and contact is to
: be avoided. Roll if you must.
