Perhaps these have already be covered but I’ll toss them out there for what they are worth – just some points I recall mentioned by others looking to provide clarity to new members:
• Kayaking is a potentially dangerous sport – You are ultimately responsible for your individual safety.
• We remind all paddlers that at a minimum they are expected to obey all laws (perhaps a link to some of the tri-state regulations could be added).
• It’s up to the individual to prepare for conditions by checking weather forecasts, being aware of local tide/currents and proficiency with skills for the conditions expected. If you are unsure what a given trip might involve you are encouraged to discuss this with the other paddlers prior to the start of the trip.
• Awareness that weather forecasts are approximations of possible conditions over a large area - there is always the possibility of rapid deterioration of localized conditions.
• You are encouraged to introduce yourself to your fellow paddlers at the start of every trip - not only is this because you are joining in a social event but there are safety benefits to it as well.
