Surfski is another option

Not really a replacement for the venerable NDK, more of a completely different species
Keep the kayak, get a ski for the big wind days, and catch waves that leave kayaks wallowing. Why?

1. At less than 30lb, the boat is half the weight of the usual sea kayak, so twice the acceleration
2. Much faster top end due to narrower beam and longer waterline
3. Understern rudder controlled by foot pedals doesn't come out in big conditions, and provides steering so you don't have to steer with the paddle to prevent broaching when sprinting to catch a wave.

So, if you find yourself working too hard for the waves you do catch, and missing many of the bigger, faster moving swells, maybe a surfski is for you.

for example, sea kayaks would be unable to catch most of the waves seen in the following South African video, which is similar to high wind conditions on Long Island Sound and off Stonington, CT.
