Re: Gearing Up

: I'm inclined to believe Randy's simply lightening the atmosphere,
: but not everyone will make the same assumption.
: This may be foolhardy, but I'll venture a comment.
: I recently read an article on heuristics, the mental shortcuts we
: all take as we manage the complex demands of everyday life.
: These heuristics work well enough most of the time and keep us
: from feeling overwhelmed in our daily activities. But in
: adventure sports (the author was analyzing a backcountry skiing
: disaster, an avalanche) the things we've done many times without
: incident can lead us to take unnecessary risks with dangerous
: consequences.
: It would be foolhardy to be unwilling to review our assumptions
: from time to time.
: It would be tragic to have one's venturesome nature remembered in a
: eulogy.
: A farmer john and drytop may keep us warm and dry on a midwinter
: paddle, but may fall short during a cold swim, when a few extra
: moments of dexterity and clarity may make all the difference.

Well said Oliver.
"Deep Survival" by Laurence Gonzales is a very good, enlightening book.
Have fun, Be safe:)
