: I have to do a little gel coat repair and got a repair kit from
: West Marine. The kit has a 1 oz tube of polyester gelcoat paste
: and hardener and color including white. Anyway, the mixing is
: 1/6 oz of past with 4 drops of hardner and no more than 5% of
: color.
: Any idea how tolerant are these for mixing. It looks like a
: measuring nightmare. This is my first repair and they did tell
: me that I had better fix it before paddling or it will wick into
: the fiberglass and cause delamination.
Gel coat and hardener are very tolerant of variation in the mix. A little shy on the hardener and it takes longer to harden, too much and it cures faster. Too much color will make for a weaker mix, but strength is not that critical in gel coat
I wouldn't worry about delamination in any event, but don't get too bound up about the ratios. Do your best and it will work fine.
