A kayak that is not being paddled will move sideways with the wind but as soon as it is paddled forward, it will begin to turn upwind. If you add the two thrust vectors that is the mathematical result: the bow turns upwind.. This may not be intuitive but that is what is happening. Think thrust vector arrows, one pointing to the side, one pointing aft. Add them up and the resulting vector points to the side and aft and the bow must turn away from the resulting thrust.
